Atomic Structure Flashcards
Nucleus
The middle of the atom containing protons and neutrons
Properties of protons
In the centre of the nucleus and have a relative charge of +1 and has a relative mass of 1
Properties of a neutron
In the nucleus and has no relative charge and relative mass is 1
Properties of electrons
In the outer of the atom (in the shell) and have a negative charge -1 or 1/2000
Atomic number
It is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus
Mass number
Total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
Isotopes
Isotopes are variants of a particular chemical element which differ in neutron number
Group number
This shows the amount of electrons on the last shell of the atom
Period number
The number that is given to a group of elements across the periodic table
Electron arrangement
Its the way electrons are arranged around the atom on the shells
Electrons
Have a relative mass of 1/2000 and have a -1 charge. The are equal to the number of protons(ONLY FOR ATOMS NOT IONS)
