Atomic Structure Flashcards
Element
is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions
Carbon
a solid that can have 2 forms , Grey graphite or pencil lead or the gemstone diamond
it is not a meatal
Sulfur
a yellow solid non metal
it makes gun powder
Iron
a hard silvery grey solid metallic element
it is very common and is used to make ships , cars , skyscraper ect
Silver
a bright grey solid metal use to make jewellery and ornaments
Gold
a heavy precious yellow metallic element use to make jewellery
Sodium
a soft , silver white metal element
is very reactive
is used in street lighting as it glows yellow when burnt
it is mixed with chorine to make table salt
Robert Boyle
Irish scientist
Father Of Chemistry
Molecule
is the smallest part of an element or compound that can exist on it’s own
Mixture
consists of two or more different substances mingled with each other but not chemically combined
Compound
a compound is a completely new substance with its own properties
it is formed when 2 or more elements are chemically combined
(usually by burning)
Examples of elements
Elements : hydrogen , copper , sulphur , oxygen , nitrogen
Examples of compounds
Compounds : water (H20) , carbon dioxide (CO) , sodium chloride (NaCl) , magnesium oxide (MgO)

Atom
is the smallest part of an element that still has the properties of that element
