Atomic Structure Flashcards
Atomic number
Number of protons (and electrons)
Mass number -
Protons + neutrons (top number on element )
Isopotopes
Same element with the same atomic number but different mass number
Mass spectrometry parts?
Ionisation - sample bombarded with electrons from electron gun
Acceleration - cations accelerated
Deflection- ions deflected through magnetic field based on m/z
Detection - ions hit detector and current is produced .
Atomic mass from isotopes
Total abundance
Electronic configuration exceptions:
Cr- 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4d5 4s1
Cu- 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4d10 4s1
Ionisation energy definition
Energy required to convert 1 mole of gaseous atoms into 1 mole of gaseous cations.
Ionisation energy trend
Generally increases along a period
Drops between groups 2 and 3- due to electron being removed from 3p level(orbital)
Drops between 5 and 6 - due to electron pair repulsion
