Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest possible particle of matter that can exist and remain pure of the element it comes from.
What are atoms made of?
Atoms are made of 3 smaller subatomic particles.
What are the 3 smaller subatomic particles that make atoms?
- Electrons
- Protons
- Neutrons
Where are neutrons and protons found?
In the nucleus of an atom
What orbits the nucleus of an atom?
Electrons
The Electrons occupy________________
Specific shelves or energy level
Do protons have a positive or negative charge?
They have a positive charge
Do electrons have a positive or negative charge?
They have a negative charge
Do neutrons have a positive or negative charge?
They are uncharged
How many electrons can hold on the first shell?
2
How many electrons can hold on the second shell?
8
How many electrons can hold on the third shell?
up to 18
What are found in the nucleus?
Protons and neutrons
Why does the nucleus of an atom have a positive charge?
This is because the nucleus of the atom consists of protons which are positively charged and neutrons which have no charge.
Why do electrons orbit the nucleus?
The nucleus attracts the Electrons which are negatively charged.
