Atomic structure Flashcards
how large is an electron
appox. 1800x smaller than a proton or neutron
How big is a nucleus
10000-100000 x smaller than the space occupoed by the cloud of electrons
electrostatic connection
how negative particles attract positive particles
What causes electrons to stay in an atom
they are bound to the nucleus by the electrostatic connection between themselves and the protons
What is the density of the nucleus
approx 10000-1000x smaller than the size of the atom by 99.97% of the atoms mass, extremley dense
what are the protons and neutrons referred to collectively
nucleons
What are chemical symbols always made up of
One of two letters, the first is always and if there is a second it is lowercase
what symbol represnts the atomic number
z
what symbol represents the atomic mass
A
what symbol represents the chemical symbol
X
what is nuclide nottation
a standard way of representing an atom, showing its atomic number (bottom left) and mass (top left)
What are isotopes
Atoms of the same element (same atomic number) but a different mass number (same number of protons/electrons but different number of neutrons)
what is shared between isotopes and what differs
they have identical chemical properties but different physical properties (density and mass), some isotopes are also radioactive
what does radioactive mean
the nucleus of the atom is not stable and will break down spontaneously into a more stable form by emitting particles are radiation
