Atomic structure Flashcards
What does Nuclide mean?
Another word for atom
What is a radionuclide?
A radioactive atom
What letter denotes the proton number?
Z
What letter denotes the Neuleon number?
A
What letter denotes the neutron number
N
What does the necleon number mean?
Mass number
Number of protons and neutrons
What does atomic number mean?
Proton number
What does nucleon mean?
The particles that make up the nucleus e.g neutrons and protons
When looking at the periodic table which number is the smallest one
Atomic number
When looking at the periodic table which number is the biggest one?
Mass number
What is an isotope?
Element with a different number of neutrons
What are the letters for the shells in order
KLMNOP
What does binding energy mean?
The amount of energy required to remove an electron from the particular shell of an atom
What is PRINCIPLE QUANTUM NUMBER - ‘n’
Another way of identifying electron shells
K n = 1 CLOSEST TO THE NUCLEUS
L n = 2
M n = 3
What is the formula for working out the number of electrons allowed in a shell
2n²
n= the shell number/energy level
What is ionisation?
Removing an electron from an atom
Explain why the binding energy of an inner shell electron is greater than an outer shell electron?
The inner shell Electrons are closer to protons which they are attracted to.
Outer shell electrons are further away and therefore less attraction.
This means it takes less energy break off these electrons.
