Atomic Structure Flashcards
What are Atoms made of?
Protons, Neutrons and Electrons
Where are sub-atomic particles located?
Nucleus - Protons and Neutrons
Outer shells - Electrons
Proton number = ? and ?
Atomic number and number of electrons
Proton number + Neutron number = ?
Nucleon Number
Nucleon number = ?
MR (Relative molecular mass)
Nucleon number - Proton Number = ?
Neutron Number
What are Isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the
same number of protons but different numbers of
neutrons.
Same chemical properties of Isotopes are due to
- the same number of electrons
only electrons are involved in chemical reactions
Different physical properties of Isotopes are due to
- different relative atomic masses;
result in different densities, melting and boiling points.
The valence shell is?
the outmost shell
How to determine which group an element is in
Look at the number of valence electrons
e.g. 2,8,8,1 is in group I while 2,8,7 is in group VII
Elements in the same group have similar
chemical properties
How to determine which period an element is in
Look at how many electron shells there in the element
