Atomic science Flashcards
If an ion is negative are there more electrons or protons?
Electrons
What is the atomic number?
It is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
What is an “ion”?
An ion is an either positively or negatively charged atom
What charge is a neutron?
Neutral
Define “molecule”
A molecule is made up of two or more atoms, they can be either the same element or different
Define “Compound”
A substance made from two or more different elements that are chemically joined
What charge is a proton?
Positive
What charge is a electron?
Negative
If an ion is positive are there more electrons or protons?
Protons
Define “atom”
The smallest particle of any existing thing
how do ions form?
Ions form because an atom wants to be stable, to be stable it needs to have a full valence shell, it does this by gaining or losing electrons. if it is easier to gain an electron to fill the valence shell, it will become negatively charged as there are now more electrons than protons, if it gains electrons, it will be negatively charged because now there are more electrons than protons.
Define “element”
A substance that is made up of atoms of only one kind, and can not be separated into different chemicals
If the atomic number of an atom is 8, how many protons are there?
8
