atomic particles Flashcards
atom
neutral; equal numbers of protons and neutrons
ion
net charge: produced by the gain or loss of electrons
-cation: loss electrons (+)
-anion: gain electrons (-)
isotope
an atm w/ a specific number of neutrons; within a particular element, there can be many isotopes; they have same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons (therefore different mass numbers)
mass number
A
-THE SPECIFIC NUMBER of prtons and neutrons in the nucleus of a specific atom (isotope)
-within an ELEMENT there can be many isotopes- different A, same Z
average relative atomic mass
AR
-measured in units of āUā
-somtimes called atomic weight
*WEIGHTED average relative mass of ALL naturally occurring isotopes
-when rounded to whole number, indication of the mass number for the MOST COMMON
radioisotope
-radioactive isotope of an element, occuring naturally or synthetic
-spontaneously emits radiation as unstable nucleus decays
