Atomic Models & Structure Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of an element
What is the nucleus?
The dense, positively charged mass located in the center of an atom
What is a proton?
A positively charged subatomic particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom
What is an electron?
A negatively charged subatomic particle found in the space outside of the nucleus
What is a neutron?
A neutral subatomic particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom
Is every living thing made up of atoms?
Yes
What was Democritus’s model?
All mater consisted of extremely small particles that could not be divided
What was Aristotle’s model?
He did not think there was a limit to how many times matter could be divided
What was Dalton’s model?
All matter is made up of individual particles called atoms which could not be divided into smaller particles
What was Thomson’s model?
Electrons embedded in a sphere of positive electric charge (plum pudding)
What was Rutherford’s model?
An atom has a dense positively charged nucleus. Electrons move randomly in space around the nucleus
What is Bohr’s model?
Electrons move in spherical orbits at fixed distances from the nucleus. An electron can move from one level to another when it gains or loses energy.
What is the electron cloud model?
Visual model of probable locations of electrons in an atom.
Where are protons located in an atom?
Nucleus
Where are electrons located in an atom?
Electron cloud
