Atomic Models Flashcards
1
Q
Planetary model
A
- Niels Bohr
- Electrons ORBIT the nucleus
- Orbits have specific size and energy
- energy relates to it’s size
- Electrons can move between each shell when gaining or loosing energy
2
Q
Nuclear model
A
- Ernest Rutherford
- atoms mainly immobile
- positive charge is in the center of the atom
- electrons move around the nucleus
3
Q
Atomic model
A
- John Dalton
- Atoms are small, can not be seen
- Can’t be divided, created, destroyed
- an element = identical atoms
- different elements = different properties
- atoms combine to from “compounds”
4
Q
Quantum mechanical model
A
- Erwin Schrodinger
- electrons move around the nucleus in a cloud called the orbital
- the orbital helps us predict the area where we can find electrons
- the closer to the nucleus, the higher chance to find electrons
5
Q
Plum - Pudding model
A
- Joseph John Thomson
- First introduced that an atom has + and - charges
- An atom is electrically neutral
- Electrons are fixed in the positive sphere
