Atomic History Flashcards
Which scientists were involved in the theory of atoms?
Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr, Chadwick
What year did Dalton do his work?
Early 1800s
What did Dalton discover?
That the smallest indivisible thing is the atom and they are small hard spheres
What year did Thomson do his work?
Early 1900s
What did Thomson discover?
He discovered the electron. An atom was a positively charged thing with negatively charged electrons scattered embedded
What year did Rutherford do his work?
1909-1911
What did Rutherford discover?
The mass of the atom is concentrated at the centre: the nucleus which has a positive charge
What year did Bohr do his work?
Early 1913
What did Bohr discover?
Electrons: they orbit the nucleus in shells
What year did Chadwick do his work?
1932
What did Chadwick discover?
Neutrons exist in the nucleus of an atom
