Atomic Emision Spectra Flashcards
What is electromagnetic radiation
Energy that transmitted as waves with a spectrum of different frequency
What happens to electrons when they take in energy from their surroundings
They move further from the nucleus and are in a higher energy level so the electrons are said to be excited
How do electrons release energy and what type of values do energy levels have
Dropping from a high energy level down to a low energy level
They have fixed value
What does a line spectrum show
Shows the frequency of light emitted when electrons drop from high energy level to a lower one
What does different electron arrangement mean
It means the frequency of radiation absorbed and emitted are different so the spectrum for each element is unique
What is the emission spectra made up of and what do they represent
Sets of lines which represent electrons moving to a different energy level
What happens to the sets of lines when the frequency increases
The sets of lines get closer together
What are the 4 basic principles to electron shells
-Electrons can only exist in fixed orbits or shells not anywhere in between
-Each shell has fixed energy
-When electrons move between shells electron magnetic radiation is emitted or absorbed
- Energy levels are fixed so radiation will have fixed frequency
What supports the idea that energy levels are discrete
The emission spectrum has clear lines for different energy levels
This means that electrons don’t move from one energy to the next instead it jumps with no in between stage
