Atomic Composition & Isotope Abundance (lesson 4) Flashcards
Valance Electron
electrons outermost shell
Electron Pairs
two electrons that are interacting in a unique way therefore they are situated close together
Unpaired Electrons
electrons in unfilled outer shell that are not a pair therefore they are more likely to be involved in chemical bonds with other atoms
Isotopes
atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons and different numbers of neutrons
Ions
atoms with a positive or negative charge
Radioisotopes
atoms with unstable nuclei that often decay into stable isotopes
Atomic Mass Unit
1/12 of mass carb-12 atom
Isotope Abundance
The amount of a given isotope of an element that exists in nature that is expressed as a percentage of the total element amount
Subatomic Particle
a particle that is smaller than an atom
Who determined that nuclei was comprised of multiple particles?
Rutherford
What causes radioisotopes?
unbalance in number of protons and neutrons so atom releases energy to try to stabilize itself bc of extra neutrons
Relative Atomic Mass
mass of all other atoms
