Q

What does it mean If alpha particles pass through a thin gold foil?

A

Most of the atom is made up of empty space and the nucleus is very small

Q

What does it mean if alpha particles are deflected off a gold foil?

A

The atoms are positively charged

If they are deflected backwards (backscattering) it means that the nucleus contains most of the atoms mass, it is very small and dense.

Q

Label this diagram of a nucleus
z
X
y

A
X = chemical symbol
Z = atomic mass number (number of protons and neutrons)
y= atomic number (number of protons)

The neutron number (N) = z-y

Q

Some atoms have combinations/ratio of protons which makes their nucleus very unstable. (They have too much energy)
What does this mean?

A

This means the nuclei will emit nuclear radiation in an attempt to become more stable, they are said to be RADIOACTIVE.

16
Q

Alpha radiation is not ver penetrating and can be stopped by…

A

5-10 cm of air or by paper

17
Q

Beta radiation is more penetrating and is stopped by…

A

10 Metres of air or several millimetres of aluminium

18
Q

Gramma radiation is very penetrating but can almost be stopped by…

A

Centimetres of lead only reduces it.

Air is very transparent to gramma rays

19
Q

What is the half life of a radioactive source?

A

The time it takes fr half the original number of radioactive nuclei to decay.
