Atom Flashcards
Atom
Smallest part of an element that can exist.
Plum pudding model
Sphere of positive charge with negative electrons embedded in it.
Nuclear model
Dense nucleus with electrons orbiting it.
Relative charge of sub-atomic particles
Proton=+ 1
Neutron= 0
Electron= -1
Relative mass of sub-atomic particles
Proton= 1
Neutron= 1
Electron= 0 (very small)
Alpha scattering experiment
Some alpha particles were fired and deflected by a gold foil. This showed that an atoms mass and positive charge must be concentrated in one small space (the nucleus.)
Element
Substance made of one type of atom.
Compound
Substance made of more than one type of atom chemically joined together.
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element with a different number of neutrons.
Mixture
Two or more substances not chemically combined.
Relative mass
Average mass of all the atoms of an element.
Oxidation
A reaction which involves gaining oxygen, (losing electrons.)
Reduction
A reaction which involves losing oxygen, (gaining electrons.)
OIL RIG
Oxidation Is Loss Reduction Is Gain
What did JJ Thomson discover
The electron and plum pudding model
