Q

what is micropolyphony

A

A technique developed by Ligeti that involves the complex weaving of many separate melodic strands into an imperceptible polyphonic fabric. The density of the polyphony renders the individual lines imperceptible.

Q

Describe the arc of the song

A

the beginning is marked 4 p’s and features some syncopation. There is a culmination point in the extreme high wind register, and then the winds and violins fade away. it builds back up to ff. then individual instruments and single pitches emerge. the finale consists of glissandi on the piano strings played by brushes. Indications on the score urge the instruments to fade away gradually into silence.
