Atmosphere Flashcards
Describe the Hadley Cell
-warm air ride at the equator creating an area of low pressure resulting in heavy convectional rain
-this air cools, becomes more dense and sinks creating an area of high pressure resulting in hot, dry weather
-some of this air returns to the equator forming the Hadley Cell
-this air gets deflected to the right due to the spin of earth
describe the formation of the Ferrel and Polar Cells
-the remainder of the warm air from the Tropics travels North and South where it converges at 60 degrees N&S with cold air from the polar regions
-this caused the warm air to rise, creating an area of low pressure and results in frontal rain
-the jet stream determined the boundary between these cells
-some of this air travels to the poles, where it sinks forming the Polar Cell
-the remainder travels N&S and sinks at the tropics to form the Ferrel Cell
