Atmosphere Flashcards
Earth’s early atmosphere
Formed by intense volcanic activity
Released mainly CO2
Also released oxygen, methane and ammonia, and water vapour
Water vapour condensed to form oceans
No land plants at this point due to the UV radiation
Limestone
Limestone is mainly made of calcium carbonate and is formed from the remains of millions of sea creatures that have died and fallen to to the bottom of the sea.
They decompose there but their shells and skeleton remain. These remains are compacted over millions of years resulting in limestone rock which is a type of sedimentary rock.
How oxygen increased
Algae and plants produced the oxygen that is now in the atmosphere by photosynthesis
Removed some CO2
Global warming
CO2 allows short wave radiation to pass through the atmosphere to earth’s surface
CO2 absorbs re-emitted long wave radiation
Insulates the Earth
