LEMON Assessment for Intubation

A
  • Look Externally ( small mouth or jaw, overbite, facial trauma)
  • Evaluate 3-3-2 rule (incisors 3 fingers, hyoid-chin 3 fingers, thyroid-floor of mouth 2 fingers)
  • Mallampati
  • Obstruction
  • Neck Mobility (if no C-spine trauma)

Indications for definitive Airway

A

Airway protection:

  • Maxillofacial fractures (severe)
  • Neck injury (hematoma, laryngeal or tracheal injury, inhalation injury, stridor / voice change)
  • Head injury (unconcious, combative)

Oxygenation (Inadequate respiratory efforts)

  • Initially Tachypnea, hypoxia, hypercarbia, cyanosis, combativeness)
  • Progressive change, accessory uscle use, resp muscle paralysis, abdominal breathing
  • Acute neurological deterioration or herniation
  • Apnea from loss of conciousness or neuromuscl. paralysis
