Atlas A - General Orientation to Human Anatomy Flashcards
sagittal plane
passes vertically through the body or an organ divides it into right and left portions
median (midsagittal) plane
divides body into equal halfs
frontal (coronal) plane
extends vertically but it is perpendicular to the sagittal plane
transverse (horizontal) plane
passes across the body of an organ perpendicular to its long axis
directional terms
used to describe the location of one structure relative to another
ventral
towards the front or belly
dorsal
towards the back or the spine
anterior
toward the ventral side
posterior
toward the dorsal side
cephalic
towards the head or superior end
rostral
towards the forehead or nose
caudal
towards the tail of the inferior end
superior
above
inferior
below
medial
towards the median plane
lateral
away from the median plane
proximal
closer to the point of attachment or origin
distal
farther fro. the point of attachment or origin
ipsilateral
on the same side of the body - left or right
contralateral
on the opposite side of the body - right or left
superficial
closer to the body surface
deep
farther from the body surface
axial region
consists of the head neck (cervical region), and the trunk
appendicular region
consists of the upper and lower limbs
associated viscera and membranous lining of the cranial cavity
brain, meninges
associated viscera and membranous lining of the vertebral canal
spinal cord, meninges
associated viscera and membranous lining of the thoracic cavities - pleural cavities
lungs, pleurae
associated viscera and membranous lining of the thoracic cavities - pericardial cavity
heart, pericardium
associated viscera and membranous lining of the abdominopelvic cavity - abdominal cavity
difestice organs, spleen, kidneys / peritoneum
associated viscera and membranous lining of the abdominopelvic cavity - pelvic cavity
bladder, rectum, reproductive organs / peritoneum
