AT4 Science all notes Flashcards
homogenous mixture
the components that make up the mixture are uniformly
distributed throughout the mixture. (e.g. salt water)
hetrogenous mixture
the components of the mixture are not uniform and have
localised regions with different properties. (e.g. oil and water)
Mixture
The parts of a mixture do not change their
properties i.e. has a blend or ‘average’ of the
substances which form it.
Compound
The elements that make up a compound lose their properties; the new compound has its own properties.
Solute
what is being dissolved
Solvent
the substance in which the solute dissolves
Solution
A mixture of solute and solvent
Soluble
able to be dissolved
Insoluble
incapable of being dissolved
Saturated
When a particular solvent has dissolved as much solute as possible
Unsaturated
the solvent can still dissolve more solute
Concentration
When a solvent contains large amounts of solute
dilute
When a solvent contains only a small amount of
solute
The cell theory
- All living things are composed of one or more cells.
- Cells are the basic units of structure and
function in an organism. - Cells come only from the reproduction of
existing cells.
The particle theory
- All matter is made up of small particles.
- These particles are always moving.
- When a substance is heated, its particles move faster.
- When a substance is cooled, its particles move slower.
- The particles are held together by forces which vary in strength.
