ASYS Mod 1-6 Exam #2 Flashcards
What is a Mach Number
The Aircrafts Speed divided by the speed of sound
What is the Speed of sound in MPH
761mph in a standard atmosphere
What is the Critical Mach Number
The speed at which air traveling over the wing reaches the speed of sound
What is a shock wave
the place on the aircraft’s surface where airflow transitions from subsonic to supersonic
what happens to Air pressure and temperature passing through a shockwave
Air Pressure increases and causes temperature to increase with it
what happens to Air Velocity passing through a shock wave
Decreases
what is transonic flight
the transition period between sub and super sonic flight. usually located between 0.8 and 1.3 mach
what happens to drag during transonic flight
drag increases dramatically until aircraft is in supersonic flight
what is shock stall
Stall produced by the shockwave rapidly increasing the boundary layer of a wing
what are two wing design characteristics that aid in transonic and super sonic flight
a swept back wing and a thin wing
what are three primary flight controls
Ailerons, Elevators and rudder
what are the three axis of rotation
Longitudinal, Lateral and Vertical
what is a Stabilator
a combination of the elevator and the horizontal stabilizer that uses the whole stabilizer as an elevator
what is a trim tab
a Secondary flight control located on each other primary flight control to help the pilot make mid air adjustments
what are the three types of trim tabs
Standard, Servo and Anti Servo
what does a Servo trim tab do
It works with the pilot to make the adjustment of flight controls easier. most commonly used on elevators during climb
what is an Anti Servo Trim Tab
A trim tab that works against the pilots inputs. can be used to create greater stability when flight controls are too easy to move
if the trim tab on an elevator was set in the downward position during climb, what effect would it have on the elevator
the trim tab would force the elevator further in the direction of movement, acting as a Servo tab to assist the pilot
what are the 4 main lift Augmenting Devices
Flaps, Slats, Slots, Spoilers
what is the difference between slats and slots
Slats are similar to a flap. they are located on the leading edge of the wing and unfold during landing to increase drag
Slots are grooves cut into the leading edge of a wing that allow high pressure air to travel up into the low preasure one and are used as a preventative measure against stalls
what is the difference between a roll spoiler, an air brake and a ground spoiler
it is three different functions of the same flight control. roll spoilers control roll at high speed, air brakes slow the aircraft during flight and ground spoilers are deployed after landing to bring the aircraft to a stop
what are three different types of flaps
Plain, Split and fowler
what are the three main phases of flight
Climb, including takeoff
Cruise, Level Flight
Descent, including landing
what are the two ways to achieve the best climb performance
best RATE of climb
and
best ANGLE of climb
what is the difference between best rate of climb and best angle of climb
best rate of climb - the highest altitude for a given amount of time. shallow angle
best angle of climb - highest altitude for a given horizontal distance. steeper angle
what is a boundary Layer
The area around the skin of the aircraft where friction drag causes a reduction in airflow
