ASYS Exam 4 Flashcards
what is the ATA chapter for landing gear
ATA 32
what purposes do aircraft landing gear serve
support aircraft
allow for ground maneuvering
allows aircraft to take off and land
what are the basic requirements of aircraft landing gear
- strong enough to accept mediocre landings
- dissipate energy from landing throughout the airframe
- light
- create as little drag as possible
two landing gear configurations
tricycle and conventional (tail dragger)
Advantages vs Disadvantages of tricycle
Advantages
- less risk of nosing over
- less risk of ground loop
- improved visibility
- level attitude for loading/unloading
Disadvantages
- Heavier
- More drag
- fragile
what are the different types of landing gear shock absorption
-rigid gear
-rubber bungee cords
-rubber compression disks
-steel springs
-composite springs
shock strut (oleo)
how does a tail dragger aircraft steer while taxiing
differential breaking
how is a tricycle aircraft controlled during taxi
cables connected to front wheel controlled via rudder pedals
what is a shimmy damper
holds nose wheel perfectly straight at high speeds so it does not rotate during flight
what ATA chapter are Doors
ATA 52
what are the 3 types of doors
- passenger
- cargo
- emergency
What are the two most common methods of sealing an aircraft door
plug or pressure
what ATA chapter are windows
ATA 56
what are aircraft windows most commonly made from
plastic
glass
acrylic
what are the two most common types of plastics? what are the differences between them
thermosetting
- can be molded only once
- opaque
thermoplastic
- transparent
- can be heated and reshaped indefinitely
two types of acrylic
monolithic
laminated
what characteristics define Acrylic
- clear as glass
- non conductive
- high strength to weight ratio
- easily scratched
- expands 3X more than aluminium
what precautions must be taken when storing acrylic
- keep out of direct sunlight
- store vertically with no wight on top
what is crazing
a large amount of tiny cracks across entire window. reduces visibility
what is delamination? what can cause it to happen
delamination is when the adhesive between layers of laminated acrylic fail and they begin to come apart. usually caused by excessive heat
what drill bit is best suited for aircraft windows
uni-bit or regular bit with a 150 degree tip
what are the precautions that must be taken when cutting acrylic
- slowly to reduce heat build up
- low blade speed to avoid catching
- leave protective film on until installation
what are the different types of damage and defects on a window
scratches distortion dulling crazing chips cracks
what is used to clean acrylic
Ethylene Dichloride
when sanding acrylic windows, what type of sand paper is to be used
Micro-mesh paper from 1500 - 12,000 grit
