astrophysics Flashcards
what soes gravity depend on
what is instantaneous velocity
mass, distance
how fast you need to go to remain in orbit
different types of orbits
orbits of themoon and planets are eliptical
comets have very elliptical orbits with the sun at fouc
orbital speed equation
2 x pi x orbital radius / time period
stellar evolution
nebula, protostar, main sequence, either red giant (then white dwarf), or red superiant, supernova, neutron star or black hole
surface temperature calculations
coldest to hottest red orange yellow white blue
what is the doppler effect.
when a source of light is moving away from us the waves undergo a change in frequency from when they were emitted to when they are observes,
red shift model answer
different elements absorb different frquenceies of light
when light is passed through a sample of an element a pattern of dark lines are produced
when we look at planets we see the same thing but at lower frequencies than they should be
the patterns have been shifted towards the red end.
redshift universe
measurements of the redshift suggest that all galxies are moving away from us
mroe distant galaxies have gerater red shift than nearer ones
that means that distant galaxies are moving away faster than nearer ones
what is a univers
galaxy
solar system
large collection of billions of galaxies
large collection of billions of stars
in the milky way
gravity
non contact force
towards centre of an object
acts at a single point centre of mass
cosmic microwave background radiation
shorter wavelength of gamma radiation emitted are believed to have become stretched until they have become microwaves
