Astronomy Flashcards
Supernova
Stars whose luminosity increases enormously due to exploding
Neutron Star
Star with the density of nuclear matter
Black Hole
An object whose escape velocity is greater than the speed of light
White dwarf
The remaining glowing core of a star that could not undergo further fusion
Main Sequence Star
A star that is fusing H in its core and has a stable balance of outward pressure from core nuclear fusion and gravitational forces pushing inward
Red Giant
A very large star of high luminosity and low surface temperature. Red giants are thought to be in a late stage of evolution when no hydrogen remains in the core to fuel nuclear fusion
Schwarzschild Radius
The radius of the event horizon surrounding a black hole
Doppler Effect
The apparent change in wave frequency during the relative motion between a wave source and its observer
Blue Shift
The displacement of the spectrum to shorter wavelengths in the light coming from distant celestial objects moving towards the observer
Red Shift
The displacement of the spectrum to longer wavelengths in the light coming from distant celestial objects moving away from the observer
Hubble’s Law
The speed of recession of galaxies are proportional to their distance from the earth
