astronomy Flashcards
what is rotation, what does it do,how long, causes?(on earth)
earth rotating on its axis,24 hrs,day and night
what is revolution, how long, what does it do,causes(on earth)
orbiting another object,1 year,seasons
why do we see phases of the moon
the phase of the moon we see depends on how much of the sunlit portion of the moon is facing earth.
how long does it take the moon to cycle through all phases
29.5 days or 1 month
name all moon phases in order
new moon,waxing crescent,first quarter,waxing gibbous,full moon,waning gibbous,last quarter,waning crescent
how does a solar eclipse happen
when the object(moon) goes between earth and sun/ casting shadow on earth(only during new moon phase)
how does a lunar eclipse happen
when the object(earth) is between the moon and sun/casting shadow on the moon(only during full moon phase)
what’s the difference in waxing and waning
the difference between waxing and waning: waxing means the lit side of the moon is getting brighter, waning means the lit part of the moon is getting darker
what is a spring tide, when does it occur
a extreme high and low tide, happens at new and full moons, spring sun, moon, earth straight line
what is a neap tide, when does it occur
a average high and low tide, happens first and last quarter, sun, moon, earth 90 degree
what’s a meteor
is a meteoroid that enters Earth’s atmosphere in which it burns up
what’s a meteorite
a meteor that hits Earth’s surface
what’s a meteoroid
is chunks of rocks/dust in space
what’s a comet and how does it tail from
its made up of ice?dust and when solar wind from the Sun melts part of the comet. The tail always points away from the sun
all official season names and date
winter solstice-dec 21,vernal equinox-mar 21,summer solstice-jun 21,autumal equinox-sep 23
heliocentric and geocentric difference
heli is the sun in the center
geo is the earth is in the center
difference in summer and winter in north hemi w/ tilt and sun rays
north pole tilt at sun it is summer w 15hr day 9hr night
when south pole tilts towards sun its winter with 9hr day 15hr night
what galaxy is our solar system apart of
the milky way
why is gravity and inertia important to the solar system
gravity keeps us together
inertia keeps planets moving.
why do we know when seasons, moon phases, tides and constellation will be visible or occur
due to our study and understanding on earth and moon predictable motion
what position is new moon
1
what position is waxing crescent
2
what position is first quarter
3
what position is waxing gibbous
4
what position is full moon
5
what position is waning gibbous
6
what position is last quarter
7
what position is waning crescent
8
how long is one revolution and roation
29.5 days
half of what is always in space
the moon
inner planets are
small and rocky
terrestrial planets are
mercury,Venus,earth and mars
outer planets are
large and gaseous
gas Giants are
Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune
how long of time will it take for new moon to a full moon
15 days or about 2 weeks
why do we only see one side of the moon
the moon revolves and rotates at the same rate so we only see one side of the moon
meteoriods come from
comets or asteriods
