Asthma Drugs Flashcards
Inhaled corticosteroids are preferred as relievers or controllers of athma?
Inhaled form is for long term prevention and prophylaxis (controllers) while IV corticosteroid is for reliever
Major risk factor of asthma?
Atopy
Antidote for Theophylline overdose?
Beta-blockers
Beta2 selective agonist for asthma prophylaxis (not for acute relief). Potentiate corticosteroid action and increase asthma mortality when used alone. May precipitate arrhythmia
Salmeterol - SIMD: formoterol, cleneterol, bambuterol
Mast cell stabilizer for asthma prophylaxis and allergies (ophthalmic, nasopharyngeal, gastrointestinal) by preventing calcium influx and stabilizing mast cells
Cromolyn - preventing degranulation and release of histamine, leukotrienes and other mediators
Corticosteroid: drug of choice for asthma prophylaxis. SE: oropharyngeal prophylaxis
Fluticasone - inhibits phospholipase A2
Similar drug of Theophylline used for intermittent claudication
Pentoxifylline
Leukotriene antagonist that blocks cysteinyl leukotriene-1 receptor for leukotrienes C4, D4 and E4
Montelukast
Condition characterized by airway inflammation and episodic reversible bronchospasm
Asthma
Drugs with no bronchodilator action except:
Montelukast, Zileuton, Cromolyn, Theophylline
Theophylline - causes bronchodilation by inhibiting phosphodiesterase and adenosine
Anti - IgE antibody drug for prophylaxis of severe, refractory asthma not responsive to all other drugs. Extremely expensive
Omalizumab - monoclonal antibody, reduces reaction to inhaled antigens
Leukotriene synthesis inhibitor for asthma prophylaxis, exercise, antigen and aspirin induced bronchospasm. SE: elevation of liver enzymes
Zileuton
Muscarinic receptor antagonist for Asthma and COPD. More effective and less toxic than beta agonists in patients with COPD
Ipratropium - prevents vagal-stimulated bronchoconstriction
Corticosteroid with the lowest systemic steroid toxicity
Ciclesonide
Beta 2 selective agonist used as a drug of choice for acute asthma attacks. SE: may precipitate arrhythmias in patient with concurrent COPD and heart disease
Albuterol/Salbutamol
