asthma/cystic fibrosis Flashcards
what is an obstructive pulmonary disease?
flow of air is impacted
what are some examples of obstructive pulmonary diseases?
asthma, emphysema, and cystic fibrosis
what occurs with asthma?
bronchoconstriction which leads to airway closure
how can you diagnose asthma?
FEV1
what are comorbidities with asthma?
obesity, sinusitis, GERD, and sleep apnea
how can breathing exercises effect asthma?
they can decrease use of rescue inhaler and corticosteroids.
what are some treatment guidelines for patients with asthma?
longer warm up period, increase humidity in area, short exertion periods, have inhaler near by
what is cystic fibrosis?
it is a defective CFTR gene that blocks Cl channels so too much sodium and water are pulled into cells, leaving behind dry mucus
what does intestinal blockage occur in CF patients?
the cells hold too much water and salt, matter in intestines is too solid
why doe CF patients have poor nutrition?
the pancreas releases less pancreatic enzymes
what are common pulmonary infections for CF patients?
staphyloccus aureus and pseudomonas aeruginosa
what is bronchiectasis?
it is damage to the airways that makes it difficult to remove mucus
what are some comorbidities seen with CF?
arthrits, osteoporosis, hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy (finger clubbing)
