define random sampling
a type of probability sampling where everyone in the entire traget population has an equal chance of being selected
define systematic sample
chooses subjects in a systematic ordered way from target population e.g. list of names
define stratified sample
where researcher identifies the different types of people that make up target pop + works out proportions needed for the sample to be representative
