Imagery- to describe the condition of the beggar
Common theme: suffering
“Sat, slumped like a half-filled sack.”
Just as a half-filled sack would look empty and misshapen so too the beggar looking lifeless and deformed which shows the condition of the beggar.
“Tiny twisted”
This means something small and distorted. In the context in which it is used it gives a negative description of the beggar using simplistic language yet it creates such a graphic images showing the beggars condition
“Ruined temple”
Just as a ruins temple would look old and run down but would have once been a beautiful building so too the beggar looking tired, I’ll and ugly due to him being neglected, which shows maccaig creating sympathy for the beggar
“A voice as sweet as a child’s when she speaks to her mother.”
Just as a child’s voice would sound innocent and delicate so too the beggar having inner beauty, being humble and appreciative despite his deformities & the lack of help he is given which shows that he is thankful for may help he receives & therefore he should be pitied.
