What is total assimilation?

A

A sound becomes completely identical to a neighbouring sound
Eg : Latin octo /ɔktɔ/- otto/ɔtɔ/ (/k/ to /t/)

What is partial assimilation

A

A sound changes only some of its features to become more like a neighbouring sound.
Example: English prefix “in-“ before bilabial sound.
Input - [ɪnpʊt]
Impossible - [ɪmpɔsɪbəl] /n/ to /m/

What is progressive assimilation?

A

A sound affected by the preceding sound, making it more similar
Example: dogs - [dɔɡz]
s the plural suffix change to /z/ because of the sound /g/
