Q

In your own words, define glacial abrasion and glacial plucking. How do these two processes work together to form roche moutonee structures?

A

Glacial Abrasion can be described as weathering that happens over time from water or ice hitting a surface and slowly changing the rocks shape.

Glacial plucking is the idea that ice will freeze above or onto rocks and then as the ice moves it takes the rock with it.

Glacial abrasion and glacial plucking work together to form Roche Mountain structures by using weathering. Think of a flowing river that has a mound in the middle that has a gentle slope on one side that cause glacial abrasion and once at the top the slope drops rapidly and rigidly because the rocks on the downslope are tore away instead of slowly kind of swept along.

Q

In your own words, describe the difference between glacial advance and glacial retreat.

A

Glacial advance is when the amount of snow and ice accumulated is larger than the amount that is melted.

Glacial retreat is when the amount of snow and ice accumulated is less than the amount that is melted.
