Q

Underlying chemistry- point 2

A

Collision theory means that for a reaction to occur the particles reacting must collide with each other with enough energy and at the right alignment to allow the collision. The more collisions that occur, in a certain time, the faster the reaction is.

Q

Underlying chemistry- point 3

A

Increasing the concentration of a solution means that there will be more moles of solute in the same volume of solution. This means that particles are moving closer together resulting in more chance of successful collision occurring. This will increase the rate of reaction.

Q

Underlying chemistry- point 5

A

Diluting the base being used will cause the concentration of the hydroxide ions (OH-) to decrease. This means the pH of the solution will decrease towards pH 7.

Q

Underlying chemistry- point 6

A

Bases can also be neutralised by acids which can also cause a decrease in the concentration of hydroxide ions in the solution and an increase in hydrogen ions (H+). When neutralisation takes place the pH of the solution will also move towards pH 7 (neutral).

Q

Description of the experiment

A

A fixed volume of acid was added to a beaker then different concentrations of a base were added to the beaker. The time taken for the reaction to end was timed and recorded.
