Q

How are descriptive terms different for brown and gray diamond colors?

A

Brown colors above K are described by the letter + the description:

e.g.
K –> “K Faint Brown”
N –> “N Very Light Brown”
S –> “S Light Brown”

Gray colors above K are described only by the description:

e.g.
K to M –> “Faint Gray”
N to R –> “Very Light Gray”
S to Z –> “Light Gray”

- Faint (G to M)
- Very Light (N to R)
- Light (S to Z)
- Fancy Light (< Z, but still light)
- Fancy (Medium Saturation or Medium Tone)
- Fancy Intense (Medium Saturation AND Medium Tone)
- Fancy Dark (Dark Tone but Low Saturation)
- Fancy Vivid (High Saturation, but not too dark)

Q

How should a diamond be examined when estimating color?

A

Face-down and face-up

17
Q

Why are colored diamonds graded in the opposite position of D-to-Z diamonds?

A

Cut can influence color of colored diamonds, so they are graded face-up.

18
Q

What color is predominant in the “orange-yellow” hue of the GIA system?

A

Yellow.

19
Q

What is the correlation between a masterstone and the grade it represents?

A

Least amount of color

20
Q

Why must a diamond be reexamined under magnification after color grading?

A

To confirm identity
