Assigment 5 Flashcards
Work Function (Definition)
The energy requiered to remove an electron from a surface of a solid element.
Maximum Kinetic energy
KE mmax = E photon - E
The maximum kinetoic energy is of the electron is the difference between the neergy of the incident photon and the work function
Energy of the incident photon
Amount o energy carried by a single photon of light that hits the surface if a material.
The energy of the photon is directly related to its wavelength or frequency.
Emission Spectrum (definition)
When hydrogen atoms are excited; that is, they contain excess energy, which they release by emitting light of various wavelength to produce what is called the emission spectrum of the hydrogen atom.
Energy levels available tp the electron in the hydrogen atom is :
E = -2.178 X 10 ^{-18} J (Z^2/ n^2)
-n is an integer ( the larger the value of n, the larger is the orbit radius)
-Z is the atomic number.
-The negative sign means that the energy of the electron bound to the nucleus is lower than it would be if the electron were at an infinite distance ( n = infit) from the nucleus.
-Equation can be used to calculate the change in energy when the electron changes orbits
Ground State (definition)
Lowest possible energy state
Change in energy when, electronm changes orbit
is Change_E = final State - Initial State.
If E is negative that ,means that the electron form changing from orbit one to orbit two had lost energy, making the hydrogen atom less charge and more stable
What are the four quantum values
N = maginitud
L = shape
ml = magnetif quantum #; orientation
ms = spin
Types of L shapes
L = n -1
L = 0; S ; sphere (sublevel)
L = 1; P = infinity
L = 2; d = butteryfly
L =3; f = everything
