Define a biopsychosocial assessment and its purpose
Used to get a complete, as much as possible, picture of the client’s problems.
Biological section - medical history, family mental illness history, development history, current medication, substance use
Psychological section - present psychiatric illness/symptoms, past or current stressors, mental status, also explore how problem have been handled/approached in the past
Social section - Client systems & client unique context; support systems, identify resources/strengths available for intervention, personal history, education and work history
What are the components of a mental status exam & how/why is it used?
This exam is necessary to get a sense of the client’s current mental state.

Define Endogenous Depression
depression caused by a biomedical imbalance rather than a psychological stressors or external factor
Define Exogenous Depression
Depression caused by a psychological stressor or external event
Define Hypomanic
elevated, expansive, or irritable mood that is less severe than full-blown manic symptoms
Define Postmorbid
occurring subsequent (after) to the onset of an illness
Define Premorbid
Prior to the onset of an illness
Define Psychotic
Experiencing delusions or hallucinations
What is Organic Brain Syndrome
- term used to describe physical disorders that impair mental functioning
- Common symptoms: confusion, impairment of memory, judgement, intellectual function, agitation
- Caused by alcoholism, Alzheimer’s, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Parkinson’s, stroke, etc
What is the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment?
self-reported inventory that categorizes people among 4 dimensions:
General attitude toward the world (introverted/extroverted)
Perceptions (sensation vs. intuition)
Processing (thinking style or feeling style)
Judging vs. Perceiving
What is the Beck Depression Inventory Assessment?
Assess presence and degree of depression in adolescents and adults
What is the Thematic Appreception test (TAT)?
Projective test, make up stories based on pictures of ambiguous scenes
What are SOAP notes
Format for developing treatment plan
S: subjective - client’s report of how they are feeling since the last visit
O: Objective - in non-health settings this include objective indicators of a problems like failing school, legal issues, in healthcare settings its vital signs
A: Assessment - pull together subjective and objective findings into a short assessment
P: Plan - plan includes will be done as result of the assessment
