Q

Primary Goal

A
  • Maintain homeostasis
  • Controls body functions:
    > metabolism
    > nutrition
    > elimination
    > temperature
    > fluid & electrolyte balance
    > growth
    > reproduction
  • Regulated by hormones

Q

Hormone Release

A
  • Secreted from endocrine glands into blood for transporation
  • Released as response to altered cellular envir’t
  • Maintain lvl of another hormone or substance

Q

Positive & Negative Feedback Mechanisms

A
  • Endocrine syst problems & disorders r/t:
    > an excess (hyper secretion) of a specific hormone
    > a deficiency (hypo secretion) of a specific hormone
    > poor hormone-receptor interactions resulting in dcrd responsiveness of target tissue

Q

Positive Feedback

A
  • More is more
  • When a trigger happens in the body, body creates hormones that continue to add until desired outcome
  • Ex:
    > child birth (uterine contractions)
    > clotting cascade
  • Less common

Q

Negative Feedback

A
  • Changing response to stimulus dcrs synthesis & secretion of a hormone
  • Lvls are added or released
  • Signals an endocrine gland to secrete a hormone in response to a body change to cause a reaction tht will result in actions to oppose the actions of the inital change & restore homeostasis

Q

Negative Feedback - Examples

A
  • Dcr serum T3 & T4; stimulates TRH; stimulates TSH: secretes T3 & T4; level normalizes; turns off TSH & TRH
  • Blood glucose lvls incr above normal, insulin is released, insulin incrs uptake of glucose in cells, causing dcr in blood gluce lvls
