Assessment & Formulation Flashcards
What are the 5 areas in the CBT hot cross bun model?
Overall environment, Thoughts, Feelings/body, Behviour.
What are some of the areas we need to explore when assessing the problem in CBT?
Vulnerability or predisposing factors:
Loss / separation experiences for depression
Attachment history (for depression and anxiety)
Family attitudes / beliefs (e.g. sexual problems, anger problems)
Family history (heredity or modelling)
What beliefs might have developed from these experiences?
Precipitating events (critical incidents): Severe life events, especially ‘matching’ ones
Accumulation of multiple stressors
Modifying factors: Relationships
Responsibilities
Major developmental / life transitions
In CBT terms what is a formulation?
-A description of the current problem(s)
-An account of why and how these problems might have developed
-An analysis of the key maintaining processes hypothesized to keep the problems going
What are the benefits of a CBT formulation?
Makes seemingly chaotic and unpredictable events more understandable
Reduces client’s (and therapist’s) confusion & demoralisation
Provides a shared rationale for developing and agreeing treatment plans
Helps understand (or even predict) difficulties in therapy and/or in the therapeutic alliance
What are the two types of formulation in CBT?
Cross-sectional formulation taken more from present moment and longitudinal formulation focused more on background factors and core beliefs.
What’s the main difference between cross-sectional formulation and longitudinal formulation?
Cross sectional focused on current cycles of tfb’s and maintenance cycles that focus on these. Differently longitudinal focus more on critical incidents, core beliefs and larger patterns?
