What are assessment accommodations?
Any alterations to the standard form of assessment or assessment conditions relating to the process which are put in place to enable learners to reflect their knowledge without being disadvantaged by the process of examination.
Why do we need AA?
AA allows barriers in assessment to be removed so that all learners can demonstrate their learning and participate in assessment
Purposes of AA
- minimise the impact of intrinsic & extrinsic barriers
- accommodate learners’ functional differences
- equalise opportunities for all learners
- provide access to assessment
Principles of AA
- early identification
- understand the purpose of accommodations
- don’t assume everyone with a disability needs accommodation
- understand the role of the SBST
- AA should parallel accommodations in instruction
- ensure learner & parents are comfortable with recommended accommodation
4 main categories of Specific learning difficulties
- reading difficulties
- difficulty with mathematics
- spelling difficulties
- writing difficulties
What are the categories of assessment accommodations?
- Timing/scheduling
- Presentation

What evidence must the school present to grant an assessment accommodation?
- That the learner has a below-average IQ
- That a history of difficulty exists & persists despite support
- That the difficulty is causing a barrier to assessment not just learning
Why would granting a child who struggles with reading a computer be preferable to granting them a reader?
The computer would mean that the child does not require a separate venue as they would if a reader was granted. This places less strain on limited resources.
