assessing ecosystems. Flashcards
2 experimental tools for looking at ecosystems and populations include:
transects and quadrats
what can transects be used for?
investigating the effect of a factor on the distribution of a species.
what’s a transect line?
a piece of tape that’s stretched across the habitat of interest.
how are quadrats placed during the investigation?
at regular intervals along the transect line.
what are quadrats?
square frames that can be used to estimate population sizes
what are quadrats used for?
estimating population sizes
Organism Abundance->
When discussing organism abundance, the following terms may be used:
the mean
the median
and the mode.
what’s the median?
the middle value in a numerically ordered series of numbers.
what’s the mode?
the most common value in a numerically ordered series of numbers.
population samples with quadrats:
estimated population size= number of individuals counted×
area sampled/
total survey area
true or false. when estimating population sizes using quadrats, counting the no. of times a species touches the quadrat frame is not a suitable method for evaluating the quadrat contents.
