Assessing aerobic fitness Flashcards
What are the 4 energy pathways in the body?
Anaerobic alactic (ATP PCR)
Anaerobic lactic (Glycolysis)
Aerobic (krebs cycle)
Aerobic (ETC)
What are the two energy sources during aerobic exercise?
Fat and carbohydrates
Where is the fat stored that is used by skeletal muscle during exercise?
FFA in the blood
Stored triglycerides in muscle (lipolysis)
What are we measuring when we measure aerobic fitness?
The ability to consume oxygen (VO2) to perform exercise
The ability to consume oxygen to perform MAXIMAL exercise (vo2max)
Def: Absolute and Relative VO2
Absolute VO2 - total volume of O2 taken into the body (L/min or mL/min
Relative VO2 - volume of vo2 relative to body weight (ml/kg/min)
When would you conduct a submax vo2 test instead of maximal?
Client ability
Reasons for the test - if not for performance most likely dont need to do maximal
Risk level of client
Availability of equipment/personnel
What are the benefits of conducting a maximal aerobic fitness test?
Classify aerobic fitness of client
More accurate data to use for exercise prescription
What is the difference between direct and indirect VO2max test?
Direct - using metabolic cart
Indirect - measuring vo2max with equations - still done with maximal effort
