ASSESS- Aerobic Flashcards

1
Q

Why is aerobic fitness important?

A

-Cardiorespiratory fitness reflects efficiency of lungs and blood vessels at transporting 02 to working muscles, and the muscles ability to work over-time
-Risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality

Q

What is the mCAFT test?

A

-Multi stage submaximal aerobic test to estimate VO2 max for ages 15-69
-Client steps up and down stairs in sessions of 3 minutes at a pace based on their age and gender
-Stages progress in difficulty
-Test ends when client reaches 85% max or doesn’t follow other protocol
-Ages 15-39 (female) start at stage 3
-Ages 15-29 (male) start at stage 4

Q

What is the mCAFT test protocol?

A

-Briefly explain purpose of test and describe termination criteria and active recovery procedures
-Before starting the test calculate clients 85% maximum
-Divide by 6 to get max 10 sec hr count number
-Demonstrate step pattern for client
-Have client practice twice without music and then twice with the soundtrack for their first stage
-Explain at stage 7 (male) or 8 (female) you will do 1 step pattern and will demo when that time comes
-Place marker on the wall or point out object for client to focus on
-Client is to step-step-up-step-step-down having both feet flat at floor and top step
-Heel needs to be planted on each step and knees need to extend at the top and base (no running)
-Can lead with right or left foot (can switch leading foot at end of 3 min segment if wanted or at bottom of one-step sequence later in test)
-Verbally cue client at start of stage
-At end of stage client stands still for HR measure: 10 second count where first is 1
-Ask for RPE after each stage
-Continue progressing in stages until 85% hr max is reached and then proceed to active recovery

Q

What is the formula for 85% maximum HR?

A

0.85 X [208-(0.7 X age)]
-Divide by 6 afterwards to determine 10 sec active HR cut-off number

Q

What is the cycle ergometer test?

A

-A submaximal aerobic assessment used to estimate VO2 max for ages 15-69
-Uses 3 minute workloads that each progress in intensity (should not be more than 4 workloads usually) so that HR increases to between 110 bpm and 85% hr max for 2 consecutive workloads

Q

What is the cycle ergometer test protocol?

A

-Briefly explain protocol and purpose of the test including it’s termination criteria and active recovery procedures
-Prior to starting test calculate clients 85% HR maximum
-Place a marker on the wall or choose a spot for client to focus on
-First load for client is 0.5 kp no matter their age or gender
-RPM must stay at 50 throughout all stages (cue client on this throughout the test)
-Record HR during the final 15 sec of each minute (10 sec ount, first count is 1)
-If clients HR is in steady state during the last 2 min of the stage (less than 5 bpm difference from previous minute) no need to extend the workload for one more min
-The HR during the last min of the first workload determines the load for the second (refer to chart) and so on
-Continue workloads until there are 2 consecutive workloads wer steady heart rate is achieved and is between 110 bpm and 85% hr max
-Ask for RPE at the end of each workload
-Then proceed to active recovery

Q

What is the protocol for active recovery?

A

-After completion of aerobic test
-Have client move at a light intensity for 3 minutes
-Record HR every minute of active (15 sec count, first count is 0)
-If client doesn’t feel sufficiently recovered do another 2 min of light activity before sitting

Q

What is the protocol for passive recovery?

A

-After active recovery
-Have client sit with feet flat and legs uncrossed
-Take HR (15 sec count, first count is 0) every minute and BP on minutes 1 and 3
-If client is not below cut-offs: HR greater than or equal to 100 bpm and/or blood pressure is greater than or equal to 160/90 mmHg
Have client stay seated for 2 more minutes and retake HR and BP, if still not below cut-offs ask client to postpone the remainder of assessments to a later date
