Paris Parlement had previously rejected Calonne’s tax reforms, so he advised that Louis call the Assembly of Notables instead.

Comprised 144 nobles and clergy members selected by the King.

Met in 1887 and Louis expected them to agree to Calonne’s tax reforms:

• new land tax with no exemptions
• New regional assemblies to implement them

The Assembly rejected them all
