Q

What is Steve Neale’s genre theory?

A
  • Genre is made up of repetition and conforms to expectation
  • AC games are all very similar in terms of style, only the location really changes.
  • In order to be successful, there needs to be some kind of variation
  • More recent AC games include multiplayer elements to make the game feel new.

What is David Hesmondhalgh’s theory?

A
  • Media industries seek to minimise risk and maximise profit
  • Ubisoft had a ‘risk averse’ business model
  • Similar games are guaranteed to make money but also stifle creativity and variety
  • This is because AC saturates the market and stops other games having a chance.
