Asphalt Flashcards
what were the first asphalts?
Macadam and later tarmac using tar to bind aggregates
later bitumen replaced tar.
This was proceded by bitumen and has later been coined asphalt
where does bitumen come from?
Crude oil
Why is crude oil appropirate for roads?
Because its viscoelastic
what is viscoelastic? Why is it appropriate?
it is a material that becomes less viscous as it is heated up. makes it perfect for reuse, repair and quick application
problems with asplat being viscoelastic?
creep over time
deforms with cyclical loaing (fatigue)
What are plolymer modified bitumens?
bitumens with enhanced mechanical properties.
whats another type of road?
rigid pavements, concrete slabs
how do we test bitumen?
with a penetration test
measures the penetration of a needle at 1n for 5 seconds into bitumen at 25C (container 55mm dia and 53mm deep)
what pen values are preffered for different climates?
warm climates require a lower pen value
cold climates require a higher pen value
what is the softening point test?
the softening point test is creating small discs of bitumen
with a steel ball placed on them
they are lowered into water wich raises in temperature by 5c per minute.
they are timed to se how long it takes for the ball to reach the bottom
what three tests are appropriate for aggregate used in roads?
Polished stone value - skid resistance
Los Angeles Coefficient - resistance to wear
Flakiness index - inherently weak and susceptible to breaking down
what is hot rolled asphalt?
its gap graded/ gaps
not alot of smaller content
40-50% aggregate
lots of bitumen
expensive
types of asphalt?
Hot rolled asphalt
asphalt concrete
stone mastic asphalt
pourous asphalt
how many kn does a standard axle give?
80Kn
7.5kn for a car
what is the makeup of a road?
subgrade - formation
capping layer - formation
sub-base
base course
binder course - surfacing
surface - surfacing
