ASPAN Standards
What is the minimum staffing for Phase 1?
2 Registered Nurses
* 1 should be RN competent in Phase 1
* Both RNs in the same room as the patient
* The Phase 1 RN has immediate access/ direct line of sight
* The 2nd RN able to hear call of assistance and ready

What are the critical elements of accepting patients in Phase 1?
- Report received from anesthesia provider
- Questions are answered
- Transfer of care has taken place
- Patient with stable/ secure airway
- Hemodynamically stable
- Not agitated/ combative/ restless
- Initial assessment completed
- RN accepted care of the patient

2 Personnel
* 1 should be RN competent in Phase 2
* Both personnel in the same room as the patient
* The 2nd personnel able to hear call of assistance and ready
Note that Phase 2 does NOT require 2 RNs but only 1 RN
