Indio-Australien Plate subducting below Eurasian Plate; it was caused by a more than 9 magnitude earthquake; the earthquake caused the seafloor to lift up, displacing the water above
short term effects
a quarter million people died; 5 to 6 million people had not food and water
long term effects
1.7 million people were made homeless; threat diseases of mixing clear and dirty water; 1,500 villages destroyed in Sumatra; fishing industry destroyed; crops destroyed; loss of earnings tourism; farm land ruined by salt water; 8 million litres oil escaped out of tank in Indonesia
short term responses
search & rescue; medical care; emergency food and water; temporary shelters; the authorities ordered quick burial or burning of the dead to avoid spreading of diseases
long term responses
an early warning system between countries surrounding the Indian ocean has been set up; rebuild costs billions of dollars; re-establishing (infrastructure)
