heat
yang deficiency = heat/cold?
cold
Sx = chills and fever, sore limbs, runny nose, cough, aversion to wind, cold or heat
exterior
Forceful movement, excessive appetite, loud and full voice, extreme restlessness, anything aggravated by pressure, rest or by adding more to it, more than normal output of bodily secretion (mucus, gas, stool but NOT urine), irritability, heavy breathing, full forceful pulse, thick tongue coating, swollen tongue, acute condition and/or onset
excess
Frail and weak movement, feeble voice, shallow and weak breathing, listlessness, low energy, anything alleviated by pressure, made worse by movement (end of the day) or made better by adding more to it, spontaneous sweating, empty, thin, forceless or weak pulse, pale tongue with little or no coating, chronic conditions
deficiency
Craves warmth, aversion to cold, cold limbs and body, pale complexion, lack of thirst, loose stool (but NOT dysentery smelly type), clear and profuse urine, sleepiness, severe localized pain, white tongue coating (not always), slow pulse
cold
High fever, desires cold, aversion to heat, heat sensation, red face, eyes & complexion, rapid breathing, thirst for cold drinks, constipation, scanty, dark and yellow urine, restlessness, rapid pulse, yellow tongue coating, red body
heat
Excess Exterior
ALL exterior syndromes are excess by definition
Exterior Deficiency
no such thing
Runny nose with clear or white d/c, cough with clear/white sputum, body aches
VS
Runny nose with yellow d/c, cough with yellow sputum, sore throat
Exterior Cold
vs
Exterior Heat
Coarse, heavy breathing, loud voice, irritability, fullness in the chest, abdominal distention, constipation, rough tongue body with a thick coat, forceful pulse
Excess Interior
Feeble/weak breathing, apathy, lassitude, dizziness, pale tongue? With thin white coat?, deep and weak or thin pulse
Interior Deficiency
Chills, cold limbs, no thirst, loose stools, clear or profuse urine, deep and slow pulse, pale tongue with white coat
Interior Cold
Higher fever, thirst, irritability, flushed face, constipation, deep yellow, scanty urine, red tongue with yellow coat, rapid and forceful pulse
Interior Heat
Everywhere in the human body, Root of the human body
Functions: promoting, warming, defence, checking, nourishing, qi hua (controls the Qi of the body)
Qi
Primary Qi, Source Qi, rooted in Kidneys
Yuan Qi
Combines all forms of Qi (Meridian Qi) = overall vitality
Zang fu Organ Qi
Functions: nourishment and moisture, nourishes hair, sinews, bones and bowels, foundation mental activities, nutrition
Blood
Food Qi (from Spleen) goes to the chest and with the influence of Yuan Qi (Kidneys), the Heart makes red BLOOD
Jing / Essence
Yin form of Source Qi, congenital yin part of you
Disharmonies manifest as improper maturation, sexual dysfunction, infertility, early aging, congenital defects
Decreased by ejaculations in men and by pregnancies in women
Can’t directly increase essence but one can better utilize it
Jing cycle men / women
8 / 7
Most immaterial & subtle, depends on Essence and Qi
Shen (Mind)
Yang in nature
Usually used as a source of other factors to enter
Arises quickly and changes rapidly
Moves around
Lungs are affected first (External Wind)
Liver affected for Internal Wind (causes itches, tremors or convulsions, stiffness, paralysis)
Aversion to cold and/or wind Sneezing Cough white d/c Runny nose with white d/c Body stiffness and aches
Wind
Injures yang Contracts and congeals Clause clear discharge Sleepiness Severe localized pain improved by heat White tongue coating and body discharges Slow pulse Craves warmth, aversion to cold, cold limbs Pale complexion Lack of thirst Loose stool Clear and profuse urine (day or night; any at night too much depending on age)
Cold
Yang in nature Blazes upwards Drying – damages Blood and Yin May cause bleeding Potential to generate Wind Affects the mind
High fever, desires cold, aversion to heat, heat sensation
Redness – skin, face, eyes & complexion
Thirst
Constipation, dry stools and /or foul smelling discharge
Scanty, dark yellow urine
Restlessness, irritability
Bleeding symptoms – cough, vomit, nose, gums, urine, stool, skin
Yellow tongue coating and other body discharges
Heat
Excess of Yin
From damp environment (clothes, living, wading, diet)
Sticky and difficult to get rid of
HEAVY AND SLOW
Feeling of heaviness, pain worse with damp Anything swollen and/or oozing No appetite, boating Cloudiness of d/c Internal organs – organ specific Channels – pain or heaviness in head Skin - oozing
Dampness
Usually from very dry and/or hot weather, internal heat, drying warming foods and/or herbs
All symptoms are DRY
Internal dryness is from Yin deficiency (can result from excess Heat too)
Dryness
Yang in nature
Only in the “summer”
Like a heat stroke
Combo of Heat and Damp
Aversion to heat Sweating/no Headache Scanty dark urine Dry lips Feeling of heaviness Irritability Thirst, no thirst if severe May see delirium, slurred speech and unconsciousness
Summer Heat
Aversion to cold Sneezing Cough with yellow d/c Runny nose with yellow mucus Itchy and/or sore throat Swollen tonsils Pulses: maybe superficial, but usually no change Tongue: no change from normal
WInd Heat
Tremors, tics
Severe dizziness, vertigo
Numbness
Severe cases convulsions, unconsciousness, hemiplegia, deviation of mouth/tongue (can come from severe heat)
Internal Wind
bitter taste
Full Heat
Fire deficiency
undernourish Earth
fire insulted by Metal
Earth excess
overdraws from Fire
overcontrols Water
6 pathogenic factors
wind cold heat dampness dryness summer heat
