Q

How do you heat fix a slide?

A
  1. Drop a minute amount of distilled water or saline on the slide.
  2. Flame loop.
  3. Hold culture plate lid at an angle and obtain a tiny amount of sample.
  4. Mix water and sample on the slide.
  5. Allow to air dry.
  6. Pass slide through flame three times with smear side up.

16
Q

A

Ampicillins

17
Q

Define the term colony.

A

A group of bacteria grown from a single cell.

18
Q

What is done between every step of the Gram stain process?

A

Rinse with water at a 45 degree angle for two seconds.

19
Q

What are antibiotics?

A
  1. Drugs that destroy bacteria.

2. Drugs that prevent bacterial infection.

20
Q

Two types of antibiotics

A
  1. Bacteriostatic

2. Bactericidal

21
Q

What do bacteriostatic antibiotics do?

A

Prevents cell division or processes

22
Q

What do bactericidal antibiotics do?

A

Kill or destroy bacteria directly.

23
Q

When was penicillin discovered?

A

1928

24
Q

Who discovered penicillin?

A

Andrew Fleming

25
Q

How do dyes stain the bacteria?

A

The negatively charged bacterial cytoplasm attracts the positively charged dye.

26
Q

How do the crystal violet and Gram’s iodine interact?

A

They produce a crystal violet-iodine complex that appear blue.

27
Q

How do Gram negative cells appear pink?

A

The bacteria is washed with an alcohol decolorized and then dyed pink with Safranin.
